PORTLAND HIGH SCHOOL
COURSE SELECTION GUIDE
2007
2008
Portland High School,
located at the heart of the citys peninsula, is striding toward the future in
close step with the exciting growth and changes in Portland. It has a prime location and students have
access to many of the citys best cultural and commercial resources. These resources range from the modern
public library and art museum to the bustling waterfront and Old Port
area.
Portland High School is
committed to developing strong and mutual respect between students, teachers,
and the community. Discipline,
which is firm and consistent, teaches students respect for themselves and for
others. An extraordinary number of
outstanding teachers challenge students to strive for
excellence.
Portland High School, a
National Landmark, is the second oldest public high school in the United
States. It was first opened on
Exchange Street in 1821. In 1863,
the school moved into what is now only the middle wing of the massive building
on Cumberland Avenue. The newer
wings were added around 1917. The
school completed renovation and expansion in 1991 to better meet the needs of
its population.
Notable Portland High School
graduates include Admiral Robert E. Perry, who discovered the North Pole, Thomas
B. Reed, who was speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, and John Ford,
who was a giant among movie directors.
Extra-curricular awards and
high achievement are the rule rather than the exception at PHS. From math team victories and National
Merit Finalists to a bevy of athletic championships, PHS students consistently
represent their school with high caliber performances.
Portland High School offers
quality educational programs that are designed to meet the needs of all
students. Included are Advanced
Placement, Honors, College, Special Education, and Vocational Technical
programs. Students are encouraged
to become involved in the PHS community through participation in clubs and
various extra-curricular activities.
