ART FUNDAMENTALS /ESL ART– semester classThis is a prerequisite for all other art classes. Maximum class size- 24 (The same as Deering). This is due to personalization, effective learning and decreased budget.This class is an introductory class for students of all abilities.It is designed to familiarize the students with a wide variety of techniques. It is a required class for students wishing to pursue more advanced art classes , as it covers the fundamentals.Introduction of the Elements of Art and the Principles of Design: Each lesson in Art I relates to the Elements and Principles of Art. All terms are reviewed and examples given. Line Exercises: Introduction of various uses of line.Value Scales and Studies: Students will understand highlight, core shadow, and cast shadows and render compositions using value. Natural objects and geometric shapes will be used for subject matter. ASL Hand Studies: students will render their hands while closely observing them. The finished project is a rendering of their hands forming their initials using American Sign Language. Portraits: Students use mirrors to study their faces for self-portraits. They then draw three studies of the face. The different drawings of the face include front facing, three-quarter and profile. Figure Studies: Students will have the opportunity to pose for other members of the class. The class will closely observe and draw the figure using blind contour, contour and gesture drawings techniques. Drawing from Still Life Compositions: Students will refer to compositions of objects in order to understand value, shape and color. 1 Point Perspective: Students will learn how to render depth on a 2-D surface. They will learn the terms: vanishing point, horizon line, convergence, diminution, overlapping and foreshortening and how to render a picture that includes all of the above terms. Color Theory: Students will become familiar with the following color schemes: Monochromatic, (Tints and Shades) Analogous, (Warm and Cool Colors) Complimentary, and recognize Primary, Secondary and Tertiary colors. Op Art Watercolor Techniques: Students will learn how to control watercolor by learning some basic techniques, such as: wet on wet, dry brush, masking, graded washes, lifting etc. Art History: Students will complete a research project on various artists and cultural arts.

ART IIThis year the serious art student will further develop skills learned in Art 1 and explore new media and techniques. Students musART II – full year course. Class size 20. (Same as Deering) Students must have had Art I as a prerequisite.t have Art I as a prerequisite as they aresequentially building upon knowledge and skills they learned in Art I.Elements and Principles Review : Sculpture that incorporates elements and principles of art into a 3-D composition. Figure & Perspective : Observational studies of the figure and environment / incorporating relationships. Pen & Ink Technique: Pointillism Scratchboard: A clay coated paper that has an India Ink coating. Students will use sgraphito knives to scratch a picture into the surface. (Similar to the reverse of Scrimshaw.) Printmaking : Positive and negative relationships , transferred images, edition creation, to form a class book of prints. Bookmaking : Japanese fold, accordion, pop-up, dos a dos, hidden essage, are a few examples that students will be introduced to. Watercolor : Proper use of wash, dry brush, stippling, aerial perspective will be introduced for a completed composition. (One example of subject matter is panoramic observational studies, with viewfinder, as seen from the windows of P.H.S.) Acrylic Painting : Overview of painting techniques- Impressionism, pointillism, expressionism, realism, and application of knowledge for completed piece. Clay Architectural Tile : Students will study various architectural elements and render a tile using various details. Perspective : Observational studies, cityscapes, landscapes, interior studies. Interdisciplinary : i.e. Illustrating stories, poems, articles written by the students or other P.H.S. students. Self Portrait: Various mediaArt History : Master studies and research. |
