J. Balser, Social Worker Portland High School "I have been a school social worker at Portland High School since 1989. Prior experience includes many years as an elementary school social worker in the Portland School System and as a psychiatric social worker in community mental health agencies in Maine. As a school social worker, my primary responsibilities include individual, group and family counseling to address those issues that pose barriers to student achievement and success. Support for special programs (e.g. Freshmen Orientation, Portland Mentoring Alliance, Impact of Language and Healthy Choices), home visits, community resource referrals, and attaining cultural comptence are also a part of the social work functions at Portland High School. My educational background is a Master of Arts (Education) from Syracuse University in Vocational Rehabilitation Counseling and a Master of Social Work from the University of Connecticut. I maintain national licensure as a Certified Rehabilitaion Counselor (CRC) and a Master Licensed Social Worker (LMSW)." |
Kathy Randall, Social Worker Kathy Randall has been a social worker in the Portland Public School system for over twenty years, and has worked for the past ten years at Portland High School. She provides individual and family counseling to students and families at school and during home visits, and works with community agencies and at other schools to meet the needs of her students. Ms. Randall's expertise extends from substance use evaluation to crisis intervention and suicide assessment. She teaches classes for students at all grade levels on depression, peer relationships and suicide. Ms. Randall works closely with a wide-range of students at Portland High School. Ms. Randall is a licensed social worker and she has a Bachelor's degree from the University of Maine and a Master's degree from the University of Southern Maine.
