The Longfellow Prize was started in 2000-2001 in Portland, Maine, the birthplace of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. The contest encourages young poets to work in the form of the sonnet. Student sonnets are submitted in the Fall to be judged by a panel of professional mentor-poets. Three award winners are celebrated at a community gathering featuring readings by the students, mentor-poets and other adult poets.
