MOCK TRIAL

Portland High School participates each fall in the Maine State High School Mock Trial Competition, which is sponsored by the Maine State Bar Association and coordinated by the EXCEL office of the University of Maine School of Law. The trials are held in real courtrooms before real judges.

Team members become student attorneys or witnesses. They prepare for trial using the Mock Trial case materials (witness statements, police or medical reports, applicable laws, exhibits, rules of evidence, etc.). The students determine the trial strategy and draft and practice opening statements, direct and cross examinations, closing arguments, and make and respond to objections.
