And - narrows your search - both terms must be found in article
Or - broadens your search - either term can be found
Not - narrows your search - excludes the term from the search
Example: Vietnam War and post traumatic stress disorder not agent orange
keep phrases together - words in parentheses are searched first
Examples: (Vietnam War) and military draft
(veteran or military) and post traumatic stress disorder
broadens your search - symbols that allow any ending (suffix) of a root word to be searched
Most common symbols are (*) and (?)
Example: Viet* will bring up Vietnam, Vietnamese, Vietcong
narrow search - used to look for exact phrase
Example: "romance, who loves to nod and sing"
broadens your search - (?) used in place of letters
Examples: wom?n (plural and singular forms: women, woman) p?ology (unsure of spelling)
